Description
This unit describes skills and knowledge required to plan and undertake rigging work for productions in arena work environments. It involves identifying and planning arena rigging requirements, inspecting equipment and completing set up tasks, and assembling and dismantling rigging and associated equipment.The unit applies to those who work collaboratively in a team environment as they take responsibility for ensuring that rigging and associated equipment is assembled in line with safety standards, prior to performances or events, and for ensuring it is dismantled following performances or events. They may be responsible for supervising others.The National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work applies to persons performing dogging, rigging, scaffolding work and operating elevating work platforms. Completion of the following units is required for certification and where applicable, at either basic, intermediate or advanced levels:CPCCLDG3001 Licence to perform doggingCPCCLRG3001 Licence to perform rigging basic levelCPCCLRG3002 Licence to perform rigging intermediate levelCPCCLRG4001 Licence to perform rigging advanced levelCPCCLSF2001 Licence to erect, alter and dismantle scaffolding basic levelTLILIC0005 Licence to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 metres or more).Different work tasks within a live production environment may fall within the definition of construction work. If so, people entering a construction site are required to complete the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work (Commonwealth of Australia, 2007).Achievement of the unit ‘CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry’ fulfils this requirement.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify and plan arena rigging requirements
- 1.1 Obtain rigging and venue plan and discuss requirements with required personnel
- 1.2 Interpret venue capacity and marking out requirements
- 1.3 Identify potential workplace hazards and determine hazard control measures
- 1.4 Organise modifications in line with own level of responsibility and refer matters that need attention to required personnel
- 1.5 Plan installation work in line with safety guidelines and licensing requirements
- 1.6 Anticipate problems that may arise during installation, rehearsal and operational phases and plan accordingly
- 1.7 Obtain approval for weight loads plan and safe work methods statement
- 1.8 Mark out rigging locations according to installation plan
2. Inspect equipment and set up tasks
- 2.1 Select and inspect rigging and associated equipment according to organisational policies and procedures and production requirements
- 2.2 Select and inspect required safety equipment
- 2.3 Identify defects in rigging, safety and associated equipment and take action in collaboration with required personnel
- 2.4 Apply hazard control measures to work area according to organisational policies and procedures
- 2.5 Interpret and communicate applicable site information to required personnel
- 2.6 Determine forces and loads associated with assembling and dismantling structures in consultation with required personnel
- 2.7 Position rigging and associated equipment for work application and stability according to organisational policies and procedures
- 2.8 Rig bridles, spreaders and other rigging equipment and create rigging points not covered by existing grids
- 2.9 Install and synchronise chain motors and winches as required
- 2.10 Install brailing lines as required
- 2.11 Install specialist staging elements according to production and safety requirements
- 2.12 Test equipment installed for functionality and adjust installation as required
3. Assemble rigging equipment
- 3.1 Assemble top rigging at ground level according to production requirements and site information
- 3.2 Operate chain hoists as required
- 3.3 Assemble bottom rigging according to production requirements and site information
- 3.4 Assemble trusses according to production requirements and site information
- 3.5 Remove excess rigging and associated equipment from work area as required
4. Dismantle and pack up rigging equipment
- 4.1 Dismantle rigging and associated equipment according to production requirements and site information
- 4.2 Inspect rigging, safety and associated equipment for damage and defects
- 4.3 Store rigging and associated equipment according to organisational policies and procedures
- 4.4 Remove hazard control measures as required
- 4.5 Organise maintenance of equipment as required
- 4.6 Participate in post-show debriefing sessions and note aspects of staging operations that could be improved in future productions
- 4.7 Review own work and adjust work practices accordingly.
