Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to set and operate a range of floor electrics for live productions or performances. It involves testing and operating floor electrics in compliance with work health and safety (WHS) requirements.The unit applies to those who create specific on-stage effects, which can involve both front and backstage lighting facilities based on a lighting plan provided by a supervising senior lighting technician or lighting designer. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Test floor electrics
  • 1.1 Prepare floor electrics according to performance or production requirements
  • 1.2 Integrate the operation of floor electrics into the live production rehearsals and advise required personnel of issues
  • 1.3 Plot, record, rehearse and execute cues on direction from required personnel
  • 1.4 Prepare back-up systems in the event of equipment malfunction
  • 1.5 Implement necessary changes to cueing and modify cue sheets as required
2. Prepare to operate floor electrics
  • 2.1 Identify, implement and document changes to floor electrics operation as required
  • 2.2 Check working order of communication equipment and back-up system
  • 2.3 Confirm supplies of consumables are adequate for performances or productions
  • 2.4 Set up elements of floor electrics according to safety and production requirements and procedures
  • 2.5 Identify equipment requiring warm-up and turn on at the required time
  • 2.6 Check elements of floor electrics to ensure they are operating as required
  • 2.7 Identify problems or faults promptly and inform personnel as required
  • 2.8 Isolate smoke detectors and check changes to air-conditioning as required
  • 2.9 Check cables are run according to work health and safety (WHS) requirements
3. Operate floor electrics
  • 3.1 Execute floor electrics changes on cue according to procedures
  • 3.2 Check cables for required setting
  • 3.3 Modify floor electrics cues as required
  • 3.4 Identify and resolve problems or faults promptly
  • 3.5 Use back-up systems when required
4. Shut down and disassemble equipment
  • 4.1 Turn off power to floor electrics elements or set to standby as required
  • 4.2 Reset smoke detectors and air-conditioning as required
  • 4.3 Prepare and position elements of floor electrics
  • 4.4 Note changes to cue sheets and other documentation, update and file according to organisational procedures
