Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to construct props for theatre and screen productions using casting and moulding techniques.The unit applies to those who work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for making props using casting and moulding techniques. They may also be responsible for supervising others.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine prop requirements
- 1.1 Confirm prop production requirements with required personnel and with reference to props documentation
- 1.2 Decide which casting and moulding techniques are best suited to the types of props required
2. Prepare for prop construction
- 2.1 Select most appropriate mould based on an analysis of how prop items are to be used and the advantages and disadvantages of different options
- 2.2 Select tools, equipment and materials appropriate to the casting or moulding technique
- 2.3 Calculate quantities of required materials, avoiding waste where possible
3. Construct props
- 3.1 Create moulds and casts using techniques, tools and materials
- 3.2 Check items produced in terms of durability, quality of finish and suitability for production requirements
- 3.3 Seek feedback on work in progress from required personnel and adjust techniques as required
- 3.4 Prepare items in readiness for finishing, according to production requirements
- 3.5 Contribute to evaluation of prop construction processes and note ways to improve own work performance
