Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to edit dialogue for different productions. It involves identifying dialogue and sound sources, cleaning up and preparing copies of dialogue and delivering master copies according to production requirements.The unit applies to those who work collaboratively as part of a production team to make post-production dialogue edits that are free of uneven sound.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Clarify project requirements
  • 1.1 Consult with required personnel and confirm editing requirements with reference to production documentation
  • 1.2 Assess quality of recorded dialogue and sound sources against creative and technical production requirements
  • 1.3 Identify dialogue and sound sources that meet production requirements in discussion with required personnel, making creative and technical adjustments as required
  • 1.4 Establish and confirm timeline for completing dialogue and sound editing process according to production requirements
  • 1.5 Anticipate problems that may arise during editing and develop contingency plan as required
2. Prepare to edit dialogue
  • 2.1 Check sound editing software and equipment is safe, operational and meets production requirements
  • 2.2 Identify and resolve technical faults and problems according to organisational procedures
  • 2.3 Confirm required files are accessible to required personnel
  • 2.4 Prepare working copies of original dialogue and sound sources that meet production requirements
  • 2.5 Complete documentation according to production requirements and organisational procedures
3. Clean up dialogue
  • 3.1 Advise required personnel on automated dialogue replacement requirements
  • 3.2 Strip synchronous sound effects from dialogue as required
  • 3.3 Clean up synchronous sounds and confirm dialogue and sound edits fit together according to production requirements
  • 3.4 Locate alternative dialogue and sound recordings as required and determine need for re-recording according to production requirements
  • 3.5 Oversee recording of post-sync dialogue and sound as required, confirming required personnel have copies of production documentation
  • 3.6 Backup dialogue and sound files regularly
  • 3.7 Discuss quality of edited material with required personnel and adjust as required
  • 3.8 Present final edit to required personnel within production requirements and timeframe
4. Complete work operations
  • 4.1 Confirm track layout of final edit is legible, consistent and indicates different dialogue and sound according to production requirements
  • 4.2 Save and deliver post-production master copy in required format, duplicating as required
  • 4.3 Store edited materials according to production requirements and organisational procedures
  • 4.4 Confirm work environment is cleaned after use and restored to pre-editing condition
5. Evaluate work
  • 5.1 Evaluate editing process in consultation with required personnel
  • 5.2 Review technical quality of edited material against production requirements
  • 5.3 Evaluate and document own performance outcomes and note areas for improvement
