Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare, make alterations and maintain props for use in a range of productions in the film, television, entertainment and interactive media industries. The unit applies to those who work as a member of a team with responsibility for care and maintenance of props for productions. They need to use a range of hand and power tools proficiently to perform their role. Individuals in this position are generally supervised by a props manager or supervisor.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Check condition of props
  • 1.1 Confirm production requirements with required personnel
  • 1.2 Check all props are in working condition and identify faults that need to be repaired
  • 1.3 Check props are labelled, coded and stored safely, in an appropriate order to meet production requirements
  • 1.4 Check consumable or hazardous props are handled correctly according to relevant work health and safety (WHS) regulations
2. Make alterations to props
  • 2.1 Confirm required prop alterations with required personnel
  • 2.2 Clean props, ensuring delicate or problem materials are serviced with care
  • 2.4 Complete minor repairs to props and store props that enable ease of retrieval
  • 2.5 Make alterations to props using required tools and techniques
  • 2.6 Clean and maintain a safe props work area
  • 2.7 Check sufficient supplies of materials are available to cover needs during production
3. Maintain continuity of props during production
  • 3.1 Check changes to continuity are updated continually, and are accurately recorded on script breakdown
  • 3.2 Arrange for replacement props to maintain continuity during productions, including reliability of supplies
  • 3.3 Dress sets throughout productions to replicate or adjust from previous takes or scenes as directed
  • 3.4 Refer to continuity documentationat all times during productions, and carry out dressing duties as required
4. Maintain condition of props
  • 4.1 Assess whether damaged props can continue to be used in production and arrange for replacements where necessary in consultation with required personnel
  • 4.2 Store, securely and safely, props no longer required during production or return to original sources in good condition
  • 4.3 Finalise required documentation in accordance with organisational procedures and protocols
