Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to construct props that include the use of mechanical devices, such as cables, levers and fulcrums.The unit applies to those who work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for ensuring that mechanical props meet the creative requirements of productions. They may be responsible for supervising others.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine requirements for mechanical props
- 1.1 Confirm requirements for mechanical props with required personnel
- 1.2 Discuss project constraints with required personnel that may impact on props required
- 1.3 Reach agreement on scope of own work and construction deadlines
- 1.4 Create construction plans that display outcomes of project discussions
2. Prepare for construction work
- 2.1 Analyse how prop items are to be used and select the most appropriate construction techniques based on prop use
- 2.2 Select tools, equipment and materials for mechanical props
- 2.3 Calculate quantities of required materials, avoiding waste where possible
3. Undertake construction work
- 3.1 Create mechanical props by following construction plans
- 3.2 Confirm safety procedures are always followed throughout the construction phase
- 3.3 Check items produced in terms of durability, quality of finish, and suitability for production requirements
4. Complete construction work
- 4.1 Seek feedback on work from required personnel and adjust techniques where required
- 4.2 Prepare items in readiness for finishing, according to production requirements
- 4.3 Improve own work performance through evaluation of the construction process
