Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to construct props that include the use of mechanical devices, such as cables, levers and fulcrums.Individuals who apply these skills work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for ensuring that mechanical props meet the creative requirements of productions. They may be responsible for supervising others.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine requirements for mechanical props
  • 1.1 In consultation with relevant colleagues and with reference to prop documentation, confirm requirements for mechanical props
  • 1.2 Discuss budgets and other factors that impact on the type of mechanical props required
  • 1.3 Reach agreement on scope of own work and construction deadlines
  • 1.4 Update construction plans to take account of discussions as required
2. Prepare for construction work
  • 2.1 Select the most appropriate construction techniques and mechanical devices based on an analysis of how prop items are to be used
  • 2.2 Select tools, equipment and materials for mechanical props according to construction plans
  • 2.3 Calculate quantities of required materials, avoiding waste where possible
3. Undertake construction work
  • 3.1 Follow construction plans to create mechanical props, ensuring that safety procedures are followed at all times
  • 3.2 Check items produced in terms of durability, quality of finish, and suitability for production requirements
4. Complete construction work
  • 4.1 Seek feedback on work in progress and adjust techniques as required
  • 4.2 Prepare items in readiness for finishing, according to production requirements
  • 4.3 Contribute to evaluation of prop construction processes and note ways to improve own work performance
