This unit describes skills and knowledge required to interpret prop production specifications, and to produce props that require the use of mixed media.The unit applies to those who work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for creating props. They may also be responsible for supervising others.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for prop production
  • 1.1 Confirm requirements for constructing props using a range of media with required personnel
  • 1.2 Discuss with colleagues ways in which production requirements could be met
  • 1.3 Select prop construction techniques that meet aesthetic requirements and provide correct visual interpretation of production requirements
  • 1.4 Take measurements for prop items and alter design scale drawings as required
  • 1.5 Select and prepare equipment, tools and media according to design and specification requirements
2. Make prop items
  • 2.1 Confirm prop design requirements are met throughout the construction process
  • 2.2 Construct prop items using the selected media, construction techniques and art finishes
  • 2.3 Follow safety procedures throughout the construction process according to organisational requirements
  • 2.4 Establish effective construction techniques by participating in ongoing trials and solve problems that arise during the construction phase
  • 2.5 Determine the effect lighting will have on constructed props
  • 2.6 Label and code all partially finished prop items for identification during the production phase
  • 2.7 Store partially finished prop items during the production phase
3. Finish mixed media props
  • 3.1 Complete fireproofing according to required state/territory health and safety legislative requirements
  • 3.2 Check prop items for accuracy and compliance with required personnel
  • 3.3 Adjust items according to feedback and discussions with required personnel
  • 3.4 Label, code and store all prop elements for identification during productions
  • 3.5 Clean, maintain and store tools, equipment and materials according to workplace and safety requirements
  • 3.6 Improve work performance by evaluating the prop construction process
