Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to vision mix productions from a control room or an outside broadcast van. Individuals prepare vision mixing documentation, set up different effects and processes and ensure mixing is completed according to production requirements.The unit applies to those who mix components from a variety of sources to create composite images, transitions and effects for live or pre-recorded television productions. They apply a broad range of technical and communication skills in an operational role.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare vision mixing documentation
  • 1.1 Confirm production requirements with required personnel
  • 1.2 Mark actions, effects and processes on scripts or production schedules according to organisational procedures
  • 1.3 Prepare contingency plans for unscripted effects and processes that may arise during recordings in consultation with required personnel
  • 1.4 Contribute to creative process as required
2. Set up for vision mixing
  • 2.1 Select applicable vision mixing methods according to production requirements
  • 2.2 Negotiate alternative strategies where designated effects and processes are beyond capabilities of available equipment
  • 2.3 Check selected effects and processes are prepared, and monitors are working within specifications
  • 2.4 Check vision sources can be accessed on vision mixing unit and previewed on monitoring equipment
  • 2.5 Note key reference points and complexities requiring special attention during productions
  • 2.6 Test equipment for technical problems and arrange for repairs or replacements as required
3. Mix vision
  • 3.1 Preview sources throughout production process and put to air on cue
  • 3.2 Respond to cues from production personnel according to production requirements
  • 3.3 Perform transitions between vision sources and reassign sources as required
  • 3.4 Assign effects and processes to applicable storage devices
  • 3.5 Respond to equipment failure, unanticipated situations and different effects and processes according to production requirements
  • 3.6 Monitor quality of creative and technical output during productions
