Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for safe execution of hazardous action sequences using different elements, equipment and processes during screen productions. It involves preparing for the execution of hazardous action sequences, setting up production areas, testing and performing hazardous action sequences, responding to emergency situations as required and securing the location at the conclusion of the sequence.The unit applies to recognised hazardous action performers who work under strict guidance of stunt coordinators, armourers, screen safety officers, fight directors and animal handlers. They are responsible for ensuring set-up, rehearsal, performance and review of hazardous action activities and complying with creative direction, screen safety reports and industry codes of practice. They are also responsible for ensuring all aspects of action sequences they perform minimise risk to themselves and other cast and crew members.Industry-graded stunt performers require a broad range of licences, certificates and gradings. Check with the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA) for other specific requirements.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for execution of hazardous action sequences
- 1.1 Arrive at set location and notify required personnel
- 1.2 Review production information and confirm production requirements for hazardous sequences
- 1.3 Check with cast and crew for technical suitability and safety compliance
- 1.4 Review skills requirements and experience of self and other specialist personnel for suitability to proposed sequences
- 1.5 Analyse hazardous action sequences and determine physical warm-up activity as required
- 1.6 Note camera locations for coverage of hazardous action sequences and positioning and movement of all involved personnel
- 1.7 Determine alternative execution methods for hazardous action sequences
- 1.8 Confirm hazardous action sequences comply with legal and regulatory requirements with required personnel
2. Attend personnel briefings
- 2.1 Obtain and review hazardous action sequence information
- 2.2 Confirm communication methods, chain of command, cues, and abort and emergency action procedures
- 2.3 Check technical specifications for production equipment and elements, and advise required personnel of issues that need addressing
- 2.4 Confirm hazardous action sequences are consistent with style of production
3. Prepare production area
- 3.1 Unload, position and assemble production equipment and elements to be used in hazardous action sequences
- 3.2 Check all equipment and handling procedures comply with safety standards and regulatory requirements and notify required personnel of non-compliance issues
- 3.3 Review camera positions for latent safety issues
- 3.4 Check production areas are clear of unwanted objects and personnel
- 3.5 Complete physical warm-up activities as required
4. Test hazardous action sequences
- 4.1 Identify and recall spot marks and other visual cues to assist in positioning during hazardous action sequences
- 4.2 Confirm all personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety equipment is fitted and functioning according to manufacturer’s specifications
- 4.3 Test hazardous action sequences through simulation or in rehearsals
- 4.4 Advise required personnel if testing identifies the need to revise planned hazardous action sequences
- 4.5 Abort hazardous action sequences where unacceptable risk emerges, and advise required personnel
5. Perform hazardous action sequences
- 5.1 Confirm whether other high-risk activities are taking place in the same scenes
- 5.2 Check again that areas are clear of unwanted objects and personnel
- 5.3 Execute sequences according to agreed production schedules and cues
- 5.4 Implement alternative safeguards for all production personnel where variations to agreed plans occur
- 5.5 Abort hazardous action sequences where unacceptable risk arises, and advise required personnel
- 5.6 Confirm continuity of hazardous action sequences is maintained throughout execution
6. Respond to emergency situations
- 6.1 Abort activities and implement emergency plans in event of accidents
- 6.2 Clear sites of all personnel and remove items that may cause further injury as required
- 6.3 Identify items and locations that may need to be isolated for safety and investigative activities
- 6.4 Advise required personnel of emergency situations according to established procedures
7. Secure locations on completion of hazardous action sequences
- 7.1 Check inventory, transport and store all production equipment and elements used in executing hazardous action sequences, in accordance with regulatory and safety requirements
- 7.2 Inspect locations and confirm they are left in a safe and secure state
- 7.3 Assess condition of elements and equipment used in hazardous sequences and advise required personnel of any issues
- 7.4 Participate in post-sequence evaluations and provide feedback to guide future productions
- 7.5 Complete personal logbook and contribute to final written reports as required
