Description
This unit describes skills and knowledge required to operate manual and automated flying systems that raise and lower soft hangings and flats, and 'fly' scenery items into and out of performance spaces. It involves completing setup tasks for flying operations, flying elements of the set and completing wrap-up tasks. The unit applies to those who work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for ensuring the smooth operation of flying systems for productions in the entertainment and events industries.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for flying operations
  • 1.1 Obtain production documentation and clarify flying requirements in consultation with required personnel
  • 1.2 Inspect fly tower and stage and identify modifications to be made to existing grid or infrastructure
  • 1.3 Organise modifications in line with own level of responsibility and refer matters that need attention to required personnel
  • 1.4 Plan installation work according to safety guidelines and licencing requirements
  • 1.5 Anticipate problems that may arise during installation, rehearsal and operational phases and plan accordingly
  • 1.6 Obtain approval for weight loads plan and safe work methods statement
  • 1.7 Plot and run through fly cues and confirm correct speed and timing of each cue
  • 1.8 Modify cues as required in consultation with required personnel
  • 1.9 Complete pre-show checks and confirm individual components of flying systems are ready for operation and comply with safety requirements
  • 1.10 Execute pre-sets and document modifications as required
2. Fly set elements
  • 2.1 Load counter-weight cradles for flying set elements in line with production requirements
  • 2.2 Rig bridles, spreaders and other rigging equipment and create rigging points not covered by existing grids
  • 2.3 Install and synchronise chain motors and winches as required
  • 2.4 Install brailing lines as required
  • 2.5 Install specialist staging elements according to production and safety requirements
  • 2.6 Test installed equipment for functionality and adjust installation as required
  • 2.7 Execute fly cues safely according to performance requirements
  • 2.8 Where counterweight systems are used, keep flown loads and counterweights in balance or under control
  • 2.9 Use brake system, handbrake or other stopping devices according to safety requirements
  • 2.10 Use control systems according to instructions from required personnel
  • 2.11 Identify problems with flying system operation and rectify or refer to required personnel according to organisational procedures and safety regulations
3. Complete post-show tasks
  • 3.1 Reset flying elements at completion of performances according to organisational procedures and safety regulations
  • 3.2 Inform required personnel of aspects of system operation that require attention
  • 3.3 Contribute to evaluations of productions and implement recommendations
  • 3.4 Organise maintenance of equipment as required
  • 3.5 Participate in post-show debriefing sessions and note aspects of staging operations that could be improved in future productions
  • 3.6 Review own work performance and adjust work practices accordingly
