This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to fill, sand, fair and grind to achieve uniform or correct contours and surfaces on marine vessels and other transport vehicles.Where slipping is required, or when working on a slipped craft unit MEM25014 Perform marine slipping operations should also be selected.Where relevant units related to specific applications and materials are required appropriate units should also be selected.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.Band: AUnit Weight: 2

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Determine job requirements
  • 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  • 1.3 Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
  • 1.4 Identify job requirements from specifications, job sheets or work instructions and determine sequence of operations
2 Prepare for filling/sanding/ grinding operations
  • 2.1 Set up safety equipment in accordance with procedures
  • 2.2 Select appropriate fillers and abrasive materials and prepare to suit job requirements and required surface finish
  • 2.3 Select appropriate equipment and accessories and set up ready for operation
3 Perform filling, sanding, fairing and grinding operations
  • 3.1 Carry out work to specified finishes using appropriate tools and techniques
  • 3.2 Use power tools to optimise equipment and material use
  • 3.3 Check surfaces to ensure compliance to specifications
  • 3.4 Make adjustments and corrections as required
