Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to conduct tip truck operations in the transport and logistics industry. This unit is appropriate for those working in tip truck driving roles.It includes planning and preparing for tip truck operations, conducting tip truck pre-operational checks and driving a tip truck. It also includes loading, transporting and tipping materials, shutting down a vehicle and cleaning up vehicle, tools, equipment and work area.Work is performed with limited or no supervision, and with limited accountability and responsibility for self and others in achieving the prescribed outcomes.Vehicle must be operated in accordance with relevant state/territory licencing authority vehicle licence requirements and regulations.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan and prepare for tip truck operations
  • 1.1 Vehicle haulage documentation is accessed, interpreted and applied to ensure work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Work requirements are obtained, confirmed and applied.
  • 1.3 Signage requirements are identified, obtained and implemented in accordance with project traffic management plan
  • 1.4 Appropriate vehicle, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) are selected
  • 1.5 Tools, equipment and PPE are checked for serviceability and faults are rectified or reported
  • 1.6 Environmental protection requirements are identified, confirmed and applied in accordance with project environmental management plan
2 Conduct tip truck pre-operational checks
  • 2.1 Pre-start, start-up, park and shutdown checks are carried out
  • 2.2 Tip truck controls and functions, including tray, body, steering, brakes and manoeuvrability are checked for serviceability and faults are rectified or reported
3 Drive tip truck
  • 3.1 Site operating hazards and risks are identified and managed, and safe operating techniques are applied
  • 3.2 Engine power is managed to ensure efficiency of truck movements, and to minimise strain on engine, drive line and gears
  • 3.3 Engine power is coordinated with gear selection to ensure smooth transition and operation within torque range
  • 3.4 Tip truck is operated in accordance with work instructions and manufacturer instructions
  • 3.5 Road/traffic conditions, traffic flow, distance, load and appropriate speed are monitored and considered to ensure safety of people, property, equipment, loads and facilities
  • 3.6 Vehicle is stopped smoothly, using engine retarder, gears and brakes
4 Load, transport and tip materials
  • 4.1 Tip truck is positioned at load and discharge points with a minimum of manoeuvre
  • 4.2 Tip truck movements are carried out in a smooth and controlled manner including raising and lowering tray body
  • 4.3 Weight and distribution of load is assessed, and type of material and size of vehicle are considered to ensure it is within vehicle capacity
  • 4.4 Safety and security of load is maintained from loading site to discharge site, including load cover requirements
  • 4.5 Load is safely discharged in accordance with fill site conditions and work instructions
  • 4.6 Tip truck body is lowered, excess material is cleared and tray body is secured before leaving site
5 Shut down and clean up
  • 5.1 Tip truck is safely parked and prepared for operator maintenance and shutdown
  • 5.2 Visual and physical inspections are conducted and faults are recorded
  • 5.3 Vehicle records are maintained/updated and submitted
  • 5.4 Work area is cleared and materials are disposed of, or recycled in accordance with workplace requirements
  • 5.5 Vehicle, tools and equipment are cleaned, checked, maintained and stored
