Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to operate a tip truck. It is appropriate for those working in tip truck driving roles.It includes planning and preparing for tip truck operations, conducting tip truck pre-operational checks and driving a tip truck. It also includes loading, transporting and tipping materials, shutting down a vehicle and cleaning up vehicle, tools, equipment and work area.Work is performed with limited or no supervision, and with limited accountability and responsibility for self and others in achieving the prescribed outcomes.Vehicle must be operated in accordance with relevant state or territory licensing authority vehicle licence requirements and regulations.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan and prepare for tip truck operations
- 1.1 Vehicle transport documentation is accessed, interpreted and applied to ensure work activity is compliant
- 1.2 Work requirements are obtained, confirmed and applied
- 1.3 Signage requirements are identified, obtained and implemented in accordance with loading/unloading site traffic management plan
- 1.4 Appropriate vehicle, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) are selected
- 1.5 Tools, equipment and PPE are checked for serviceability and faults are rectified or reported
- 1.6 Environmental protection requirements are identified, confirmed and applied in accordance with loading/unloading environmental management plan
2 Conduct tip truck pre-operational checks
- 2.1 Pre-start and start-up checks are carried out
- 2.2 Tip truck controls and functions, including tray, body, steering, brakes and manoeuvrability, are checked for serviceability and faults are rectified or reported
3 Drive tip truck
- 3.1 Engine power is managed to ensure efficiency of truck movements, and to minimise strain on engine, drive line and gears
- 3.2 Engine power is coordinated with gear selection to ensure smooth transition and operation within torque range
- 3.3 Tip truck is operated in accordance with work instructions and manufacturer instructions
- 3.4 Road/traffic conditions, traffic flow, distance, load and appropriate speed are monitored and considered to ensure safety of people, property, equipment, loads and facilities
- 3.5 Vehicle is stopped smoothly using engine retarder, gears and brakes
4 Load, transport and tip materials
- 4.1 Site operating hazards and risks are identified and managed, and safe operating techniques are applied
- 4.2 Tipping specific hazards are identified, including type of load, unstable, uneven tipping surfaces, cross gradients, tipping uphill and cross slopes, overhead power lines, trailer coupling types (type of turntable) and trailer position (straight line)
- 4.3 Tip truck is positioned at load and unload points with a minimum of manoeuvre
- 4.4 Tip truck movements are carried out in a smooth and controlled manner, including raising and lowering tipper body/tray
- 4.5 Mass and distribution of load is assessed, and type of material and vehicle dimensions are considered to ensure it is within vehicle and allowable mass limits for axle group and gross vehicle mass/gross combination mass capacity
- 4.6 Vehicle is inspected for lose materials prior to departure, including on top of tarps and draw bars between tyres
- 4.7 Safety and security of load is maintained from loading site to unload site, including load cover requirements
- 4.8 Load is safely unloaded in accordance with unload site conditions and work exclusion zones
- 4.9 Tipper truck body/tray is lowered from within cabin safely with minimum movement and travel required, excess material is cleared, and tipper body/tray is secured and draw bars cleaned (as applicable) before leaving site
5 Shut down and clean up
- 5.1 Tip truck is safely parked and shutdown
- 5.2 Park and shutdown checks are carried out
- 5.3 Visual and physical inspections are conducted, and faults are recorded and reported according to workplace procedures
- 5.4 Vehicle records are maintained/updated and submitted
- 5.5 Vehicle, tools and equipment are cleaned, checked, maintained and stored
