Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural protocols and values to develop as an Indigenous Australian performing artist. The unit applies to those who are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers with some practical experience in traditional Indigenous Australian dance. They could be developing their awareness of customary law and copyright issues for performances at events in the local community or in public performances for visitors to their region or community.The local or community cultural knowledge necessary to achieve competency in this unit may only be accessible to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, or persons recognised by specific Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Elders or those persons who are local custodians of local cultural heritage.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to engage with Indigenous communities in ethically and culturally appropriate ways
- 1.1 Identify reasons for engaging with Indigenous communities and the required protocols to be followed
- 1.2 Source information from required personnel and determine how principles of customary law affect own performance practice
- 1.3 Make ethical arrangements for engagement according to requirements for respect and support of cultural needs
- 1.4 Seek and apply guidance and direction from cultural mentors
2. Demonstrate ethical approach to cultural protocols in performances
- 2.1 Investigate reasons for and scope of code of ethics in own sector
- 2.2 Consult with required personnel and determine required content for a code of ethics
- 2.3 Discuss impact of implementing a code of ethics on the community with required personnel
- 2.4 Develop strategies for advocating and supporting the renewal of traditions in culturally and ethically appropriate ways
- 2.5 Research and identify copyright requirements to ensure protection of cultural heritage
3. Apply and review adherence to cultural protocols when performing
- 3.1 Demonstrate compliance with customary law and cultural protocols when performing
- 3.2 Implement strategies to accommodate cultural differences during performance
- 3.3 Seek feedback from required community and identify ways to improve observation of cultural protocols
