This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to escort mobile works in civil construction including determining traffic control requirements, implementing traffic controls and using radio communication.It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. 1. Plan and prepare to escort mobile works
- 1.1 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to escort mobile works
- 1.3 Identify and implement traffic management signage requirements
- 1.4 Select plant, vehicles, tools and equipment to carry out work activities and check for faults
- 1.5 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures within scope of own role
- 1.6 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
- 1.7 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required to respond to emergencies
2. Establish traffic control operations
- 2.1 Check arrow boards and rotating beacon warning signs as required for serviceability and suitability
- 2.2 Assess and record site and traffic variables
- 2.3 Determine traffic control requirements according to job requirements
- 2.4 Select traffic control requirements according to job requirements
- 2.5 Position advance warning signs and traffic control devices
- 2.6 Determine and confirm maximum speed limit for traffic control operations
3. Use radio communication
- 3.1 Adjust radio controls for required transmission and reception
- 3.2 Test and confirm radio contact
- 3.3 Transmit radio messages according to job and site requirements
- 3.4 Check radio contact periodically according to site requirements
4. Position traffic controls
- 4.1 Position traffic control signs and display on vehicles according to job requirements
- 4.2 Display and operate vehicle warning lights according to job requirements
- 4.3 Position vehicles in the work convoy according to job requirements
- 4.4 Assist work crew to place advanced warning signs according to job requirements
- 4.5 Control traffic according to job requirements
5. Conduct clean-up activities
- 5.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to site requirements
- 5.2 Clean, check, perform maintenance on and store vehicles, tools and equipment according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
