This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to escort mobile works in Civil construction. This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles. Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for escort mobile works
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply escort mobile works documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work instructions before proceeding
  • 1.3 Identify, and implement traffic management signage requirements
  • 1.4 Select, and check for faults, plant, vehicles, tools and equipment to carry out work activities
  • 1.5 Identify, address and report hazards, risks and environmental issues
  • 1.6 Select and wear correct personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • 1.7 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Establish traffic control operations
  • 2.1 Check arrow boards and/or rotating beacon warning signs for serviceability and suitability
  • 2.2 Determine traffic control requirements
  • 2.3 Select traffic control requirements
  • 2.4 Assess and record site and traffic variables
  • 2.5 Position advance warning signs and traffic control devices
  • 2.6 Determine and confirm maximum speed limit for traffic control operations
3. Use radio communication
  • 3.1 Adjust radio controls for optimum transmission and reception
  • 3.2 Test and verify radio contact
  • 3.3 Transmit radio messages clearly and concisely
  • 3.4 Check radio contact periodically
4. Position traffic controls
  • 4.1 Position traffic control signs and display on vehicles
  • 4.2 Display and operate vehicle warning lights
  • 4.3 Position vehicles in the work convoy
  • 4.4 Assist work crew to place advanced warning signs
  • 4.5 Control traffic effectively
5. Clean up
  • 5.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
  • 5.2 Clean, check, maintain and store vehicles, tools and equipment
  • 5.3 Carry out housekeeping activities
