This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to construct portals in Civil Construction.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles. Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to construct portals
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply construct portals documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work instructions before proceeding
  • 1.3 Identify, obtain and implement the traffic signage requirements
  • 1.4 Select and check for faults plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
  • 1.5 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • 1.6 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
  • 1.7 Identify preliminary ground work requirements to support portal surrounds prior to excavation
  • 1.8 Identify, address and report environmental issues, potential hazards and risks
2. Excavate portal shape
  • 2.1 Determine location, alignment and direction portals from details contained in job drawings and specifications
  • 2.2 Identify and apply method of construction for portal
  • 2.3 Prepare material for the construction process of the selected portals according to design plans and specifications
  • 2.4 Complete excavation to plan
  • 2.5 Control dust and noise suppression in accordance with EPA and WHS requirements
3. Support excavation and form portal surrounds
  • 3.1 Install sheeting and/or first set to specifications
  • 3.2 Excavate and trim battering to design and drainage specifications
4. Install ground support
  • 4.1 Identify ground support from project drawings and specifications
  • 4.2 Construct base to detail drawings and specifications
  • 4.3 Install ground support and shotcrete/concrete
  • 4.4 Place drainage and seepage provisions
5. Conduct housekeeping activities
  • 5.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
  • 5.2 Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment
  • 5.3 Carry out housekeeping activities
