Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to establish chemical requirements and inspect, start, monitor and shutdown chemical systems to meet safety, quality and productivity requirements in the pulp and paper industry. This unit applies to production support operators who prepare chemical products and systems. This typically involves working in a facility with complex integrated equipment and continuous operations.Licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit in some states and territories at the time of publication and may differ according to jurisdiction.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Establish chemical requirements
  • 1.1. Determine chemical requirements according to work health and safety (WHS) and environmental procedures, safe working requirements, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), risks and hazard identification and housekeeping requirements.
  • 1.2. Maintain a clear and hazard free work area in the pulp and paper plant.
  • 1.3. Identify appropriate plant and equipment to be used for chemical systems.
2. Inspect and prepare chemical systems
  • 2.1. Inspect chemical systems following work health and safety (WHS) and environmental procedures, safe working requirements and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • 2.2. Remove isolations.
  • 2.3. Conduct visual check of delivery systems.
  • 2.4. Use electronic control systems to confirm operational suitability of delivery systems.
  • 2.5. Prepare and mix additives to specifications as required.
  • 2.6. Conduct quality checks on chemical product as required.
3. Start, monitor and maintain chemical system
  • 3.1. Conduct process tests and adjust process to ensure product quality.
  • 3.2. Maintain documentation and record hazardous situations.
  • 3.3. Identify, repair or replace faulty equipment.
4. Implement and conduct shutdown procedures for chemical systems
  • 4.1. Plan shutdown procedures according to workplace guidelines.
  • 4.2. Organise and conduct shutdown procedures.
  • 4.3. Record results and corrective actions.
