This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct auger miner operations in Coal Mining (Open Cut).This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles. Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to conduct auger miner operations
  • 1.1. Access, interpret and apply auger miner operations documentation, and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2. Conduct pre-start checks in accordance with safety requirements
  • 1.3. Access, interpret and apply geological and survey data
  • 1.4. Select and wear appropriate personal protective equipment
  • 1.5. Identify, address and report potential hazards and risk
  • 1.6.Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Operate auger miner
  • 2.1. Coordinate activities with others at the site prior to commencement of, and during, the work activity.
  • 2.2. Carry out pre-start, start-up, park-up and shutdown procedures in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions
  • 2.3. Conduct, control and monitor auger mining procedures within equipment limitations and capacity
  • 2.4. Select required loading method and position equipment and haulage units to meet this requirement
  • 2.5. Act or report on monitoring systems and alarms
  • 2.6. Complete the work plan
3. Carry out operator maintenance
  • 3.1. Prepare the machine for maintenance
  • 3.2. Carry out routine and scheduled maintenance tasks
  • 3.3. Clear worksite of tools, debris and defective components and restore to site and safety requirements
  • 3.4. Process written maintenance records
