Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to create short dance pieces in different dance styles, including tap, jazz, contemporary, street and cultural dance. This involves developing choreography and organising staging of the performance, including lighting and audio requirements.The unit applies to those who are dance teachers and choreographers. They plan, compose and stage, but do not perform in, short dance pieces. Dance pieces may be for dance school productions or other non-professional contexts. Work is usually undertaken with some supervision, though autonomy and judgement can be expected given the nature of the creative process.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to compose dance pieces
- 1.1 Clarify intention of dance piece and performance requirements with required personnel
- 1.2 Use different sources to generate ideas and determine stimuli for dance piece
- 1.3 Translate ideas and intention of dance piece into choreographic plan using knowledge of movement elements and dance styles
- 1.4 Agree on aspects of staging and performance with required personnel and record them on plan
- 1.5 Confirm safe dance practices are included in plan
2. Develop and demonstrate choreography
- 2.1 Confirm that intention in dance plan can be realistically performed in dance piece
- 2.2 Demonstrate and express movement ideas and styles from plan
- 2.3 Review and modify ideas and movement elements using self-evaluation and feedback from required personnel
- 2.4 Maximise interest throughout dance piece using content, phrasing and flow
- 2.5 Determine and document final choreography to be performed
3. Prepare for staging performances
- 3.1 Identify and select suitable music, costumes and props according to intention of movement and dance piece
- 3.2 Prepare performance space and confirm it meets requirements for well-defined entrance, exit and audience orientation
- 3.3 Check that dancers, dancing and aspects of staging are organised according to performance requirements and audience expectations
4. Evaluate dance pieces
- 4.1 Seek feedback from required personnel on own skills in dance creation process
- 4.2 Evaluate own skills throughout dance creation process
- 4.3 Document feedback and review process as required
- 4.4 Discuss strengths and weaknesses of dance piece with required personnel and identify strategies for improving own techniques
