Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to informally convey information between Auslan signers and English speakers in both directions.It requires the ability to convey a summary of original communications in informal and unplanned situations where Auslan and English users interact. It also requires the ability to explain information recorded in Auslan and English.Completing this unit will not provide the skills to work as an Auslan interpreter. It applies to individuals who are both proficient users of Auslan and English and who are called upon to informally bridge a communication gap.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Facilitate communication between Auslan and English speakers.
  • 1.1. Distinguish role in assisting communication from that of interpreting, and recognise situations when a professional interpreter is required.
  • 1.2. Extract essential information from signed text and spoken English.
  • 1.3. Convey a summary of the original utterance to assist communication.
  • 1.4. Facilitate questions and answers between parties.
  • 1.5. Use a range of techniques to assist parties to communicate and maintain flow of communication.
  • 1.6. Use clear expression in both English and AusIan appropriate to the context and relevant to the conversation.
2. Explain recorded messages.
  • 2.1. Extract essential information from recorded Auslan and English texts.
  • 2.2. Explain the key themes and gist of the information.
  • 2.3. Summarise the gist of any opinions and options provided in the original utterance.
