This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to break oversize rock in Civil Construction, Coal and Metalliferous mining, and Extractive.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.No licensing or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to break oversize rock
- 1.1 Access, interpret and apply break oversized rock documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
- 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
- 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
- 1.5 Communicate and coordinate activities with others prior to, during and on completion of the work activity
- 1.6 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for an emergency
2. Break rock and remove
- 2.1 Select and access plant, tools and equipment for work activity
- 2.2 Identify and locate designated oversized rock/s
- 2.3 Assess rock and determine the correct method to break rock according to dimensions, location and grade of rock
- 2.4 Notify relevant personnel of rock breaking process
- 2.5 Apply correct techniques to achieve required rock size
- 2.6 Prepare and remove broken rocks
3. Conduct housekeeping activities
- 3.1 Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment
- 3.2 Report issues identified with plant, tools and equipment
