Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare, set out, cut and install mosaic and panel parquetry floors to complete rooms. It includes laying a moisture vapour barrier and underlay.Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training.They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to install mosaic and panel parquetry flooring
- 1.1 Interpret mosaic and panel parquetry flooring installation requirements from job and manufacturer instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required
- 1.2 Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating
- 1.3 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Gather the parquetry flooring material and confirm its species, grade, size, quantity and quality against job instructions
- 1.5 Check and confirm the parquetry flooring material’s moisture content is suitable for site conditions according to workplace procedures
- 1.6 Gather adhesives, trims and other materials required by job instructions, and check they meet quality requirements and are prepared and ready to install according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
2. Install moisture vapour barrier and underlay
- 2.1 Confirm the subfloor is clean and suitable for installing the moisture vapour barrier and parquetry, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
- 2.2 Remove or undercut door jambs, cover trims and other joinery, and store for refitting or send for machining according to job instructions
- 2.3 Fasten the moisture vapour barrier according to manufacturer instructions
- 2.4 Measure, mark and cut underlay to length and size to minimise waste
- 2.5 Fasten underlay according to workplace procedures and manufacturer instructions
- 2.6 Finish installing underlay to meet quality requirements
3. Cut, fit and fasten mosaic and panel parquetry flooring
- 3.1 Establish the starting point and mark out working lines
- 3.2 Lay out the parquetry flooring according to job instructions to maximise aesthetics with respect to material colours, grains and patterns, to minimise waste, and to ensure an efficient, quality installation
- 3.3 Measure, mark and cut parquetry fingers or panels as required
- 3.4 Apply adhesive to the substrate according to the according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
- 3.5 Install the parquetry flooring according to the manufacturer instructions, allowing appropriate intermediate and perimeter expansion joints
- 3.6 Install finishing strips appropriate for the type of subfloor, refit removed items and finish installing the flooring
- 3.7 Check the parquetry flooring is installed correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies
- 3.8 Make any necessary preparations for sanding the parquetry flooring according to job instructions
4. Complete the task according to workplace procedures
- 4.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
- 4.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
- 4.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
- 4.4 Complete task outcome documentation
