Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to assess and patch single thickness veneer mechanically to an acceptable level for continued use.The unit applies to production workers who repair veneer mechanically in a forest and wood products factory setting.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for repair
- 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
- 1.2 Select appropriate personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
- 1.3 Obtain type and quantity of material to be repaired from the veneer production process.
- 1.4 Select patch strips in line with work order.
2. Patch veneer
- 2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.
- 2.2 Complete pre start-up equipment checks to ensure operational effectiveness.
- 2.3 Set equipment controls and coordinate veneer flow with other operators to ensure minimal downtime.
- 2.4 Inspect veneer defects, cut patch strips minimising wastage and feed into machine.
- 2.5 Position veneer sheets to accept patch, and process.
- 2.6 Position out-feed bins or trays to collect repaired veneer and clear regularly.
- 2.7 Patch manually where mechanical process is not possible.
3. Redistribute material
- 3.1 Grade patched veneer in line with organisational procedures and industry standards.
- 3.2 Direct material to storage or processing operations in line with organisational procedures.
- 3.3 Dispose of irreparable material and excess patch strips in line with environmental protection practices.
- 3.4 Clean work area and store unused patch strips in line with organisational safety procedures.
- 3.5 Record and report production outcomes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.
