Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform music for an audience as part of a group. This includes preparing for performance, applying technical and musicianship skills during group performance, and evaluating elements of performance to develop improvement strategies.The unit applies to those who perform as instrumentalists and vocalists as members of a group. They work in any musical genre and have well developed interpersonal communication and collaboration skills.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for performance
- 1.1 Establish music and staging requirements of performance with required personnel
- 1.2 Check instrument or voice, and other equipment required for the performance is working to required standard
- 1.3 Tune instrument and confirm required pitch with group members if required
- 1.4 Perform warm up routine according to safe work practices
- 1.5 Implement personal self-care strategies and relaxation techniques for performance anxiety as required
2. Apply technical and musicianship skills during performance
- 2.1 Meet technical and interpretive elements of music being performed in line with performance requirements
- 2.2 Enhance interpretive aspects of performance using music knowledge
- 2.3 Use stagecraft skills and performing style required for context of music and performance
- 2.4 Develop plan to respond to issues that arise during performance as required and maintain integrity of performance
3. Interact with others during performance
- 3.1 Interact with stage management and other artistic, venue, studio and organisational staff as required
- 3.2 Give cues, respond to directions and maintain responsiveness to other performers throughout performance
- 3.3 Sustain musical line and harmony in ensemble as required by style and context of performance
- 3.4 Achieve balance in dynamics and style with other performers using listening skills and adjusting playing or singing and volume as required
- 3.5 Confirm music entries and exits are consistent with style of music and as agreed with other performers
- 3.6 Use verbal and non-verbal language to communicate with other performers during performance
4. Evaluate and develop strategies to improve performance
- 4.1 Discuss strengths, weaknesses and errors in performance with group members and assess technical and artistic development
- 4.2 Evaluate suitability of repertoire choice and programming for the group technical standard, and assess overall musical balance in the program
- 4.3 Assess group stage presentation and role of individual performers for future performance improvement
- 4.4 Determine ways in which communication with audience can be improved
- 4.5 Develop strategies collaboratively for refining group performance and technical skills based on outcome of evaluations
