Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to complete basic repair and maintenance of production equipment and facilities used in the screen, media and entertainment industries.It applies to individuals who work under the supervision of a technical director or senior production staff, using some discretion, judgment and relevant theoretical knowledge to carry out their responsibilities. Testing and tagging of electrical equipment must be carried out by a person with the relevant certificate of competency in accordance with the performance specifications of:Australian Standard 3760: 200 In-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipmentAustralian Standard 3002: 1985 Electrical installations - shows and carnivals.In some states and territories:only licensed electricians can undertake the tasks outlined in Element 2a restricted electrical licence is required to repair and maintain production equipment. Restricted electrical licences allow a person to carry out electrical work incidental to a trade. Incidental work may include fault-finding on equipment or changing like-for-like equipment by disconnecting and reconnecting the fixed wiring. It does not include any other changes to the fixed wiring.Check with the relevant regulator for specific guidance on requirements.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Undertake routine maintenance of equipment
  • 1.1 Check required maintenance is within scope of licence
  • 1.2 Safely clean and maintain equipment, cables and accessories
  • 1.3 Conduct safety checks on equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions
  • 1.4 Check, source and replace spare parts and consumables according to enterprise procedures
  • 1.5 Accurately record checked and maintained items, and provide copies of documents to relevant personnel
2. Repair production equipment
  • 2.1 Check required repairs are within scope of licence
  • 2.2 Identify faults and safely shut down equipment if necessary
  • 2.3 Isolate fault using fault-detection procedures, and determine nature of repairs
  • 2.4 Tag faulty production equipment
  • 2.5 Safely make minor repairs to faulty equipment to meet agreed deadlines
  • 2.6 Discuss faults and repairs with technical specialists, if required
  • 2.7 Refer complex repairs to technical specialists, in consultation with relevant personnel
3. Review and document maintenance activity
  • 3.1 Complete maintenance documentation and distribute to relevant personnel as required
  • 3.2 Review all repair and maintenance activities to ensure compliance with work health and safety (WHS) law and regulations and enterprise procedures
