Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to carry out equipment and basic rig maintenance in drilling. The unit prepares individuals to prepare and paint metal surfaces and assist in the maintenance of materials handling equipment.It applies to those working in assistant roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for operations
- 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to carry out equipment and basic rig maintenance and confirm work activity is compliant
- 1.3 Identify and minimise environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activity
- 1.5 Clarify difficulties in carrying out instructions with relevant personnel
- 1.6 Communicate with other personnel on site as required and confirm briefings and handover details are communicated and received
- 1.7 Confirm availability of necessary auxiliary equipment
2. Prepare and paint metal surface
- 2.1 Prepare surface using required equipment
- 2.2 Apply rust remover, rust converter and undercoat according to operational requirements and workplace procedures
- 2.3 Mix epoxy, paracryl or other paints in required proportions
- 2.4 Mask and protect equipment against overspray
- 2.5 Apply finishing coat using brush, roller and spray gun
- 2.6 Clean equipment according to operational requirements and workplace procedure
3. Assist in maintenance of materials handling equipment
- 3.1 Identify faults and potential faults and report immediately
- 3.2 Identify, record in writing and report as necessary requirements for repair and maintenance
- 3.3 Perform periodical maintenance on chain blocks and come-alongs, confirming equipment is corrosion free, lubricated and operating freely
- 3.4 Assist with periodical examination of hooks, shackles, slings and strops for defects, required marking of safe working load and ease of operation according to workplace procedures
- 3.5 Maintain equipment according to workplace procedures
4. Clean up work area and equipment
- 4.1 Isolate area being washed and provide warning signs to indicate slippery decks as required
- 4.2 Prepare and apply solvent solutions and rig wash and confirm work area is maintained for non-slippery conditions
- 4.3 Clean equipment using hazardous chemicals where required according to safety requirements and stow on completion
- 4.4 Clean, preserve and reassess painting equipment
