Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop basic analytical skills to identify music notation conventions and to play or sing music from simple written music notation.It applies to individuals who are instrumentalists and vocalists, and use music reading skills in a performance context. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Explore conventions of music notation
  • 1.1 Identify simple rhythmic, melodic and harmonic notation symbols and structures
  • 1.2 Examine symbols and notation conventions applicable to form and music
  • 1.3 Identify dynamics and expression marks, and symbols and their meanings
2. Perform notated music on an instrument or voice
  • 2.1 Develop music reading skills through private practice
  • 2.2 Interpret simple melodic and rhythmic notation symbols and structures as required
  • 2.3 Interpret harmonic symbols and structures as required
  • 2.4 Follow music patterns and form symbols and structures as indicated
  • 2.5 Interpret dynamics, expression marks and symbols appropriately
3. Identify opportunities for further development of music reading skills
  • 3.1 Seek feedback from appropriate people to identify individual strengths and weaknesses, and develop strategies to improve skills
  • 3.2 Identify suitable exercises and repertoire for practising music reading skills in collaboration with appropriate people
  • 3.3 Establish a plan for further development of music reading skills
