Description
This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to slumptest concrete to ensure that the mix is workable and complies with the delivery docket and specified order.It includes sampling and slumptesting concrete supplied for use on residential, commercial and civil construction sites. It applies to concreters working as members of a team with at least a moderate degree of autonomy. They would be expected to complete routine activities without close supervision.Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency in all states and territories except Tasmania. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm these requirements.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to slumptest concrete.
  • 1.1 Review and clarify task to slumptest concrete.
  • 1.2 Review task specifications and check to make sure they are in accordance with legislation, regulations and codes of practice.
  • 1.3 Review work health and safety (WHS) requirements for the task in accordance with safety plans and policies.
  • 1.4 Review environmental requirements for the task in accordance with environmental plans and legislative requirements.
  • 1.5 Select plant, tools and equipment, check for serviceability and rectify or report any faults.
  • 1.6 Clean standard slumping cone in preparation for slump testing.
2. Conduct slump test.
  • 2.1 Fit personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • 2.2 Take sample of concrete in accordance with Australian Standard requirements and test for consistency, directly from the delivery truck and after discharge of initial 0.2 cubic metres.
  • 2.3 Level-off slumping cone and clear surplus concrete from steel plate and slumping cone.
  • 2.4 Raise slumping cone without moving the sample.
  • 2.5 Measure sample for conformity with tolerance levels and carry out resampling if sample is outside tolerance.
  • 2.6 Record collapsed or sheared samples.
3. Clean up after conducting slump test.
  • 3.1 Clean, check, maintain and store tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and workplace requirements.
  • 3.2 Apply work completion procedures and notify nominated personnel that testing is completed.
