Description
This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to prepare new and previously coated shopfittings and surfaces and apply stains, lacquers, paint or sealer to create the required finish. It covers confirming job requirements, preparing tools and materials, and completing work to client and workplace requirements.The unit supports shopfitters who prepare surfaces of shop doors, windows, walls, ceilings, partitions and shopfittings; and then apply a range of liquid finishes.It applies to some work which may be carried out off site on units being fabricated for installation and other work completed on site concurrently with other shopfitting work. The work must be scheduled to accommodate both client requirements, where the shop is operational, and the requirements of other shopfitters and associated contractors.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of endorsement.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan and prepare to apply finishes.
  • 1.1 Job requirements are obtained,reviewed, confirmed with relevant personnel and applied to planning.
  • 1.2 Work site is inspected, conditions and hazards are identified and reported as required, and health and safety requirements for preparing surfaces and applying finishes are confirmed with relevant personnel and applied to planning.
  • 1.3 Surfaces to be covered, surface preparation method, liquid finishes and application methodsto be used are identified and confirmed.
  • 1.4 Job safety analysis (JSA) or safe work method statement(SWMS) for preparing surfaces and applying finishes is reviewed, and confirmed with relevant personnel.
  • 1.5 Sequence of work is identified and scheduled in consultation with client and other shopfitters according to job requirements.
  • 1.6 Tools and equipment are selected to carry out tasks according to job requirements, checked for serviceability, and faults are rectified or reported before starting work.
  • 1.7 Liquid finishes are selected and quantities are calculated according to job requirements.
  • 1.8 Liquid finishes are obtained, prepared, safely handled and located ready for use.
2 Prepare surfaces.
  • 2.1 New or uncoated surfaces are prepared according to liquid finish manufacturer specifications, substrate and job requirements.
  • 2.2 Substrate of previously coated surfaces is identified and condition of surfaces is determined according to liquid finish manufacturer specifications and job requirements.
  • 2.3 Previously coated surfaces are prepared by removing unwanted coatings and loose debris according to job requirements.
  • 2.4 Prepared surface defects are repaired and imperfections stopped, filled and sanded to smooth finish ready for required finish according to liquid finish manufacturer specifications and job requirements.
3 Apply stains and lacquers to surfaces.
  • 3.1 Stain is applied evenly and consistently using specified application method according to health and safety and workplace procedures.
  • 3.2 Stained surfaces are checked for consistent colour and dryness and wiped to provide a clean surface for the application of lacquer according to job requirements.
  • 3.3 Consistent coverage of lacquer is applied to surfaces using specified application method according to manufacturer recommendations, and health and safety and workplace procedures.
4 Apply paint or sealer to surfaces.
  • 4.1 Paint or sealer is applied using specified application method to obtain an even coverage according to job specifications, and health and safety and workplace procedures.
  • 4.2 Painted or sealed surfaces are allowed to dry and checked for consistent coverage.
  • 4.3 Surfaces are lightly sanded and wiped to provide a clean surface for repeat applications according to job specifications, and health and safety and workplace procedures.
5 Clean up.
  • 5.1 Area is cleaned and reusable and waste materials are stored or disposed of according to workplace procedures.
  • 5.2 Unused liquid finishes are sealed and stored according to manufacturer instructions.
  • 5.3 Application tools and equipment are cleaned according to safety data sheet (SDS) for the liquid finish used.
  • 5.4 Tools and equipment are cleaned, maintained and stored according to workplace requirements.
