Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide support at the blast site for underground shotfiring operations.The unit applies to those working in site-based roles in the coal mining and metalliferous mining sectors.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between States, Territories and industry sectors, and must be sourced from state jurisdictions prior to applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to support shotfiring activities
- 1.1 Access, interpret and apply blasting documentation for allocated job, and ensure the work activity is compliant
- 1.2 Obtain, confirm and apply shotfiring requirements, shift briefings, handover details and/or work orders
- 1.3 Access, interpret and apply geological and survey data required to complete allocated job
- 1.4 Identify health, safety and environmental hazards, assess the risks, and implement control measures in line with workplace procedures
- 1.5 Locate, select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
- 1.6 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
- 1.7 Coordinate and communicate planned activities with others at the site prior to commencing work activity
2. Provide support at blast site
- 2.1 Establish, secure and isolate blast site
- 2.2 Ensure holes are drilled to authorised blast plan
- 2.3 Flush or clean and test drill holes
- 2.4 Follow appropriate precautionary measures relevant to ground conditions, including identifying reactive ores and using explosion inhibitor as required
- 2.5 Collect explosives and accessories, and identify and report deteriorated items
- 2.6 Transport explosives according to requirements and procedures
- 2.7 Remove from blast site equipment and facilities not required for loading
- 2.8 Load and stem explosives in line with workplace procedures
- 2.9 Monitor hazards, identify potential emergency situations, and respond appropriately to meet changing work conditions
3. Complete support activities
- 3.1 Complete muck out and/or final clean-up in line with workplace procedures
- 3.2 Assist with securing blast site after work activity is complete
