Description
This unit covers the competency required to locate, identify and check the status of fire safety systems, while predominantly under direct supervision. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Locate and identify fire safety systems
- 1.1 Fire safety systems are identified and located in buildings.
- 1.2 Onsite visual identification of fire safety systems and mode of operation is confirmed and reported to supervisor.
2. Check and monitor the status of fire safety systems
- 2.1 Fire safety systems are checked in accordance with organisational procedures.
- 2.2 Status of fire safety systems is monitored, irregularities such as faults and isolation of individual functions are identified and reported in accordance with organisational procedures.

Assessment must confirm the ability to:

identify components of sprinkler systems

Competency should be demonstrated over time in a range of actual or simulated workplace environments.

Competency should be assessed on-the-job or in a simulated workplace environment.

Access is required to:

Method of assessment
In a public safety environment assessment is usually conducted via direct observation in a training environment or in the workplace via subject matter supervision and/or mentoring, which is typically recorded in a competency workbook.
Assessment is completed using appropriately qualified assessors who select the most appropriate method of assessment.
Assessment may occur in an operational environment or in an industry-approved simulated workor in an agency-approved simulated work environment. Forms of assessment that are typically used include:
direct observation
interviewing the candidate
journals and workplace documentation
third party reports from supervisors
written or oral questions
