Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to set up, operate and maintain edge banding machines that use automated processes to apply and finish edge treatments. The unit applies to individuals who operate equipment and apply edge banding to timber panels in a forest and forest product factory setting.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for edge banding
- 1.1 Review work order to determine job requirements and, where required, seek clarification from appropriate personnel
- 1.2 Review workplace health and safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment, equipment lock-out and safe manual handling techniques
- 1.3 Identify, assess and take actions to mitigate risks and hazards associated with banding edges of panels
- 1.4 Identify workplace environmental protection procedures for minimising and disposing of waste material, cleaning tools and equipment, and maximising energy efficiency
- 1.5 Identify type and quantity of panels to be edge-banded, and obtain panels
- 1.6 Select appropriate tools and equipment, and check for operational effectiveness according to manufacturer recommendations
- 1.7 Select edge banding process according to work order
2. Set up edge banding equipment
- 2.1 Follow lock-out procedures, set machine to suit material to be edged and adjust as required
- 2.2 Use equipment according to workplace safety procedures, manufacturer instructions and environmental protection practices
- 2.3 Conduct test runs to check machine operation, accuracy and quality of finished work and make adjustments to machine settings
- 2.4 Use suitable tested materials for processing, or reject and dispose of according to environmental protection practices
3. Apply edging
- 3.1 Feed panels into machine according to manufacturer instructions and safety procedures
- 3.2 Monitor machine operations to ensure product quality and output
- 3.3 Minimise waste by checking trim distances for cut off on each panel
- 3.4 Assess condition of panels and repair, recycle, reuse or dispose of sub-standard panels according to environmental protection practices
- 3.5 Identify routine processing and equipment faults, and resolve or report to appropriate personnel
- 3.6 Complete production and quality records and report according to procedures
4. Complete operator maintenance
- 4.1 Follow workplace safety procedures to lock out equipment
- 4.2 Check edging mechanisms for bluntness and build-up of glue, and rectify
- 4.3 Check and reload edge treatments according to manufacturer recommendations
- 4.4 Clear dust and debris from machine area
- 4.5 Record and report equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel
