Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to operate the transfer process and transfer wood chips to stockpile or transport systems. Work is completed in a forest products factory setting.The unit applies to Sawmill Worker, Production Worker, Machine Operator. No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to transfer wood chips
  • 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
  • 1.2 Select appropriate personal protective and other equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
  • 1.3 Plan transferral process in line with work order.
  • 1.4 Inspect deposit point for access and cleanliness.
2. Set up and use equipment for wood chip transfer
  • 2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.
  • 2.2 Complete pre start-up equipment checks to ensure operational effectiveness.
  • 2.3 Adjust machines and feed systems for wood chip transfer or transport.
  • 2.4 Identify and obtain type and quantity of wood chips to be transferred.
  • 2.5 Monitor conveyor operations and clear jams to ensure free flow of output material to transfer systems.
  • 2.6 Use a chip slinger or air blower to transfer wood chips.
3. Complete wood chip transfer
  • 3.1 Direct slinger or blower to enable filling or distribution over required area.
  • 3.2 Check filling or distribution levels and stop or top up in line with work order.
  • 3.3 Identify routine processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel.
