Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to coordinate and document the safe and efficient shutdown and restart of a glass production or processing plant. The shutdown may be a planned or an unplanned shutdown or emergency.This unit applies to experienced workers who interpret and use advanced technical information to develop solutions to potentially complex glass and glazing requirements. They commonly work independently and typically solve complex problems that require theoretical knowledge and experience about the specification, manufacture and installation of a wide range of glass and glazing products. Job roles commonly involve leadership and supervisorial responsibilities.Workers with this competency typically work as leading plant technician on a shift. They use discretion and judgement to respond to the shutdown and coordinate all personnel involved to ensure the shutdown is safe and orderly and that the plant is left in the best condition possible for a quick restart.At the time of this unit’s release, the work described in this unit does not require licensing or certification, but state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training. They must also comply with relevant legislation, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturers’ installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Manage the shutdown sequence
- 1.1 Check plant safety systems and ensure the plant has been made safe
- 1.2 Identify and analyse the reason for the plant shutdown using information systems and other data
- 1.3 Obtain confirmation of the identified shutdown from operators to verify the nature and the reliability of the shutdown
- 1.4 Initiate procedures to rectify the cause of the fault or shutdown with repair or readjustment before returning the system to start-up status
2. Conduct the start-up process
- 2.1 Satisfy all start-up permissions before starting the start-up process
- 2.2 Conduct start-up and return to normal operation according to workplace procedures
3. Document the shutdown and start-up process
- 3.1 Complete logs and workplace documentation with required details, actions and responses
- 3.2 Record and report any ongoing production problems according to workplace procedures
