Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to colour match paints using original equipment manufacturer (OEM) paint codes. This unit involves preparing for the task, selecting and using specialist tools and equipment, preparing colour matching test cards, mixing and spraying paint and conducting a visual colour match, and completing workplace processes and documentation.The unit applies to those working in the automotive paint refinishing repair industry.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to apply basic colour matching techniques
  • 1.1 Identify job requirements from workplace instructions
  • 1.2 Identify hazards associated with the work, assess potential risks and implement control measures in line with workplace policies and procedures
  • 1.3 Identify tools, equipment and chemicals required for repair activity and establish serviceability according to workplace procedures
2. Mix paint colour
  • 2.1 Set up and check paint measuring system required for job according to workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Carry out colour mixing using methods, tools, equipment and materials, according to workplace procedures
3. Prepare colour test cards and perform visual matching
  • 3.1 Prepare and spray test cards according to workplace procedures, OEM paint codes, workplace health and safety and environmental requirements
  • 3.2 Carry out visual matching and make comparisons between matched and original paint, and record paint codes
  • 3.3 Remix paint for further matching if mix does not match original paint
4. Complete work processes
  • 4.1 Conduct final inspection according to workplace procedures and confirm vehicle is ready for use
  • 4.2 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to workplace procedures
  • 4.3 Complete documentation according to workplace procedures
