Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to inspect and assess flooring installation sites and report with recommendations about the condition of timber and concrete subfloor structures and subfloors and about factors that may affect the installation of flooring coverings including underlays on them.Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training. They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to assess flooring installation sites
  • 1.1 Identify from the customer’s enquiry or job instructions the type of the proposed floor coverings and other relevant work requirements
  • 1.2 Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating
  • 1.3 Select and check all required inspection, testing and other tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Determine the subfloor surface requirements of the proposed floor coverings from manufacturer instructions
2. Assess flooring installation environments
  • 2.1 Identify aspects of the internal and external environment that may affect the installation of floor coverings
  • 2.2 Investigate the potential interactions between the environment and the proposed floor coverings
3. Assess subfloor structures and subfloors
  • 3.1 Visually inspect the subfloor structure and subfloor to identify the materials used
  • 3.2 Run and check datum lines and confirm dimensions are accurate
  • 3.3 Complete tests appropriate to the type of floor covering to be installed according to manufacturer instructions
4. Report findings according to workplace procedures
  • 4.1 Identify remedies to any faults identified and make recommendations for floor coverings
  • 4.2 Prepare an assessment report
  • 4.2 Make copies of the report available to appropriate people
