Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate truck or trailer mounted attenuators when carrying out traffic management activities in civil construction. It includes planning and preparing, using radio communication, operating and positioning truck or trailer mounted attenuator, using traffic controls, and cleaning up.It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under minimal supervision to undertake a broad range of tasks in varied work contexts, using some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services or contingency measures.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to operate attenuator
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm safety requirements from site safety plan, vehicle movement plan and organisational policies and procedures and apply to the allotted task
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to operate truck or trailer mounted attenuators and confirm work activity is compliant
  • 1.3 Identify, obtain and implement signage according to job requirements
  • 1.4 Select vehicles, plant, tools and equipment required for work activities, confirm serviceability and rectify and report faults as required
  • 1.5 Identify, confirm, clarify and apply environmental protection requirements
  • 1.6 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required to respond to emergencies
2. Conduct attenuator pre-operational checks
  • 2.1 Check attenuator connection with host vehicle, tyres and brakes according to trailer mounted attenuator pre-start check
  • 2.2 Carry out start-up, park and shutdown procedures according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 2.3 Check truck and attenuator controls and functions for serviceability and report and rectify any faults as required
3. Operate communication devices
  • 3.1 Adjust communication device such as radio controls for transmission and reception
  • 3.2 Test and confirm radio contact between all vehicles and handheld radios
  • 3.3 Transmit radio messages according to job requirements
  • 3.4 Confirm communications contact after nominated period of non-contact
  • 3.5 Confirm radio communication is maintained between vehicles and confirm correct positioning of vehicle
4. Operate mounted attenuator
  • 4.1 Identify site hazards associated with truck or trailer mounted attenuator operations
  • 4.2 Identify and apply safe operating techniques for truck or trailer mounted attenuator according to national truck or trailer mounted attenuator guidelines
  • 4.3 Operate truck or trailer mounted attenuator according to job requirements
5. Position traffic controls and truck or trailer mounted attenuator
  • 5.1 Position and confirm traffic control signs and display on vehicles
  • 5.2 Display and confirm required vehicle warning lights
  • 5.3 Position vehicle according to traffic management plan, and traffic and site safety regulations
  • 5.4 Confirm traffic is controlled and work crew protected according to job requirements
  • 5.5 Move truck or trailer mounted attenuator between worksites, observing road rules and traffic management requirements
  • 5.6 Confirm incidents are recorded and reported as required
6. Carry out operator maintenance
  • 6.1 Conduct inspection and fault finding according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 6.2 Complete required documentation according to site requirements
7. Conduct clean-up activities
  • 7.1 Confirm work area is clear and dispose of or recycle materials according to site requirements
  • 7.2 Confirm tools and equipment are cleaned, checked, maintained and stored according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
