Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate a truck or trailer mounted attenuator when carrying out traffic management activities in Civil construction. It includes planning and preparing, using radio communication, operating and positioning truck or trailer mounted attenuator, using traffic controls, and cleaning up.This unit is appropriate for those working in assistant roles.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced from the relevant Road Authorities prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to operate the attenuator
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply relevant traffic management / attenuator documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm safety requirements from the site safety plan, vehicle movement plan and organisational policies and procedures, and apply to the allotted task
  • 1.3 Identify, obtain and implement signage requirements
  • 1.4 Select vehicles, plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks consistent with the requirements of the job, check for serviceability and rectify or report any faults
  • 1.5 Identify, confirm, clarify and apply environmental protection requirements
2. Conduct truck and attenuator pre-operational checks
  • 2.1 Check attenuator connection with host vehicle, tyres and brakes (trailer mounted) in accordance with trailer mounted attenuator pre-start check
  • 2.2 Carry out start-up, park and shutdown procedures in accordance with manufacturer's and/or site specific requirements
  • 2.3 Check truck and attenuator controls and functions, including raising and lowering attenuator, video cameras or other attachments, brakes and manoeuvrability for serviceability and report or rectify any faults
3. Operate communication devices
  • 3.1 Adjust communication device such as radio controls for optimum transmission and reception
  • 3.2 Test and verify (radio) contact between all vehicles and hand held radios
  • 3.3 Transmit (radio) messages clearly and concisely
  • 3.4 Check communications contact after nominated period of non-contact
  • 3.5 Ensure (radio) communication is maintained between vehicles to confirm correct positioning of vehicle
4. Operate truck or trailer mounted attenuator
  • 4.1 Identify site hazards associated with truck or trailer mounted attenuator operations
  • 4.2 Identify and apply safe operating techniques for truck or trailer mounted attenuator to achieve optimum safety in accordance with national truck or trailer mounted attenuator guidelines
  • 4.3 Operate truck or trailer mounted attenuator to work instructions including closing lanes and working in a mobile / progressively moving work situation
5. Position traffic controls and truck or trailer mounted attenuator
  • 5.1 Position and check traffic control signs and display on vehicles
  • 5.2 Display and check vehicle warning lights including arrow boards and/or rotating beacon warning lights
  • 5.3 Position vehicle according to traffic management plan, and meeting traffic and site safety regulations
  • 5.4 Ensure traffic is controlled effectively to protect the work crew
  • 5.5 Move truck or trailer mounted attenuator safely between worksites, observing relevant road rules and traffic management requirements
  • 5.6 Ensure incidents are recorded and reported as required
6. Carry out operator maintenance
  • 6.1 Conduct inspection and fault finding in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and/or organisational requirements
  • 6.2 Complete required documentation
7. Clean up
  • 7.1 Ensure work area is clear and dispose of or recycle materials appropriately
  • 7.2 Ensure tools and equipment are cleaned, checked, maintained and stored
