Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to build a towable recreational vehicle chassis by fabricating the chassis and assembling and installing its suspension and braking system. Towable recreational vehicles include caravans, fifth wheelers, tent trailers, camper trailers and hybrids. The unit does not address building the chassis of a motorhome, a campervan or a slide-on camper.The unit applies to a person working in a recreational vehicle manufacturing facility where chassis are manufactured on-site. The person undertakes routine tasks according to job instructions, plans/specifications and procedures and uses discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services and contingency measures. They work with a high degree of self-direction and limited supervision. They apply known solutions to routine problems and report non-routine problems according to procedures. They are responsible for their output and have limited responsibility for the output of others.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to build chassis
  • 1.1 Identify chassis building requirements from job and manufacturer’s instructions
  • 1.2 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use
  • 1.3 Gather chassis, suspension, braking system and other items required by job specifications, and check they meet quality requirements
  • 1.4 Identify hazards and hazard controls and check the hazard controls are in place and operating
2. Fabricate chassis
  • 2.1 Assemble and align chassis components in the jig
  • 2.2 Weld the chassis according to workplace procedures
  • 2.3 Fit the vehicle identification number plate to the chassis
  • 2.4 Clean the chassis and prepare it for coating according to manufacturer’s instructions
  • 2.5 Select, mix and prepare coatings according to job instructions
  • 2.6 Apply coatings according to manufacturer’s instructions
3. Assemble and install suspension and braking systems
  • 3.1 Fit axles, hubs and rims onto the chassis according to the manufacturer’s instructions
  • 3.2 Assemble the suspension components and fit the suspension according to the manufacturer’s instructions
  • 3.3 Fit and tighten the wheels according to the manufacturer’s instructions
  • 3.4 Fit, wire and test the braking system according to the manufacturer’s instructions
  • 3.5 Check the chassis, suspension and braking system meet quality requirements and rectify any deficiencies
4. Complete the build according to workplace procedures
  • 4.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
  • 4.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
  • 4.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
  • 4.4 Complete task outcome documentation
