Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to create and perform complex solo or ensemble dance pieces for formal presentations.The unit applies to those who apply dance composition and performance skills in class work, rehearsals, auditions, and performance situations. This includes collaborating with and taking direction from others. Responsibility and autonomy are required to create dance pieces that reflect a choreographer’s individual style.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan dance pieces
  • 1.1 Clarify purpose, intention and requirements of performance and dance piece through discussion with required personnel
  • 1.2 Develop dance plan that outlines how intention will be expressed through movement elements
  • 1.3 Relate movement elements to chosen dance style and include in dance plan
  • 1.4 Combine chosen dance style with creative movements and confirm that intention in dance plan uses three-dimensional movement
  • 1.5 Record choreographic ideas
2. Compose dance pieces
  • 2.1 Create choreography according to dance plan, incorporating other artists and art forms
  • 2.2 Communicate ideas and intentions using demonstration and expression of movement and styles
  • 2.3 Document, analyse and reconstruct choreography using dance notation skills
  • 2.4 Demonstrate a distinctive approach to treatment of movement materials
  • 2.5 Share work in progress with required personnel and seek feedback on how well choreography reflects intention of dance piece
  • 2.6 Devise, rehearse and edit dance piece for formal presentation
3. Create production elements to accompany dance pieces
  • 3.1 Identify and select suitable music, costumes and props in line with intention of dance piece
  • 3.2 Identify, source and set up audiovisual resources needed for performance as required
  • 3.3 Prepare performance space that allows for well-defined entrance, exit and audience orientation
  • 3.4 Organise dancers, costumes, props and effects according to purpose and requirements of performance
4. Present dance pieces in a formal setting
  • 4.1 Contribute to presentation of finished works in role of choreographer and dancer
  • 4.2 Provide clear direction, feedback and encouragement to other dancers and technicians
  • 4.3 Maintain content, phrasing and flow throughout dance piece
  • 4.4 Integrate technology and supporting visual content in choreography as required
5. Evaluate complex dance pieces
  • 5.1 Document choreographic processes and reflection process in required format
  • 5.2 Seek feedback from required personnel on dance creation process
  • 5.3 Document and record dance reviews and feedback
  • 5.4 Self-evaluate dance piece and composition process and develop strategies to improve future work
