Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop the basic dancing, acting and vocal techniques required for musical theatre.The unit applies to those who are pursuing a career in musical theatre and other contexts where musical theatre skills are required. Performances could be in commercial settings, such as cruise ships, casinos and corporate events, or in community settings. At this level work is normally supervised, though some autonomy and judgement can be expected within established parameters. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Analyse and prepare to practise basic musical theatre techniques
  • 1.1 Identify characteristics, styles and genres of musical theatre from both a contemporary and historical perspective
  • 1.2 Review and explain musical theatre terminology
  • 1.3 Develop a physical conditioning program for improving stamina, strength and flexibility, in consultation with required personnel
  • 1.4 Perform physical and vocal warm-up procedures for dance, singing and acting activities
  • 1.5 Identify required clothing and footwear for exercise regime and practising dance technique
  • 1.6 Apply safe dance practices to prevent injury to self and others
2. Practise basic dance, vocal and acting techniques
  • 2.1 Demonstrate posture, body alignment and breathing required for dance, vocal and acting techniques
  • 2.2 Demonstrate isolation, coordination and control of upper and lower body when practising simple dance techniques and movement sequences required for musical theatre
  • 2.3 Incorporate connection of phrases, locomotor and non-locomotor movements into movement sequences
  • 2.4 Combine rhythm and correct timing into movement sequences
  • 2.5 Develop dynamic vocal techniques and phrasing for different musical theatre styles
  • 2.6 Build a character using basic acting skills and respond to different circumstances in character
  • 2.7 Incorporate spatial awareness, connectivity and interactive skills when performing with others
  • 2.8 Perform physical and vocal cool-down procedures for dance, singing and acting activities
3. Review application of dance, vocal and acting techniques
  • 3.1 Seek constructive feedback from required personnel on musical theatre techniques
  • 3.2 Identify and develop ways to improve own musical theatre techniques using constructive feedback from required personnel
  • 3.3 Identify sources outlining industry trends and opportunities for observing industry practitioners
