Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to prepare and conduct pointing operations of hardwood and softwood material using cutter or saw type machinery. The unit applies to operators who produce pointed timber products in a forest products factory setting.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for pointing operation
  • 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
  • 1.2 Select appropriate equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
  • 1.3 Plan pointing operations in line with work order.
2. Maintain pointing operation
  • 2.1 Follow lock out procedures and adjust machinery to suit size and type of timber to be processed.
  • 2.2 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions environmental protection practices.
  • 2.3 Produce posts and pegs at optimal rate consistent with material type, acceptable surface finish and equipment capability.
  • 2.4 Monitor pointing operation to ensure consistency of product dimension, quality and finish in line with organisational quality standards.
  • 2.5 Monitor shaving and sawdust removal system to ensure waste material is effectively controlled.
  • 2.6 Coordinate supply of material with appropriate personnel and report timber faults.
  • 2.7 Sort and process finished products in line with organisational procedures.
  • 2.8 Identify routine processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel.
3. Shut down operation
  • 3.1 Shut down pointing operation in line with manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • 3.2 Complete basic non-specialist maintenance for equipment in line with manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • 3.3 Record and report equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel.
  • 3.4 Clear work area and dispose of waste in line with environmental protection practices.
  • 3.5 Complete production and quality records and report in line with organisational procedures.
