Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work effectively in the drilling industry. It prepares individuals to perform tasks such as safe handling, practising general good housekeeping and checking, refuelling and driving vehicles. It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories and Industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for working in the drilling Industry
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply required drilling documentation and confirm work activity is compliant
  • 1.3 Identify and minimise environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
  • 1.5 Communicate with other personnel on site as required and confirm briefings and handover details are communicated and received as required
2. Perform safe manual handling
  • 2.1 Assess load to be moved
  • 2.2 Assess and plan stability of lift, transport route and lay down position according to safety and task requirements
  • 2.3 Move load using manual handling techniques and aids and seek assistance where required
3. Routinely practice good housekeeping
  • 3.1 Identify housekeeping requirements
  • 3.2 Clean and tidy work area
  • 3.3 Clean and store all tools and equipment according to workplace requirements
  • 3.4 Identify and report potential hazards from poor housekeeping
  • 3.5 Identify areas of improvement for housekeeping and escalate as required
  • 3.6 Report equipment problems verbally or in writing
4. Complete prestart checks
  • 4.1 Check plant, tools and equipment required to carry out tasks for faults and report or rectify within scope of own role and confirm ready for use
  • 4.2 Check and top up fluids as required
  • 4.3 Check all guards and safety devices are in place and serviceable
  • 4.4 Confirm all personnel are clear or in a safe position before starting work activity
  • 4.5 Complete required written records according to task requirements and workplace procedures
5. Complete plant and vehicle refuelling procedures
  • 5.1 Enforce no-smoking zone before commencing refuelling
  • 5.2 Select required fuel
  • 5.3 Refuel engine as required
  • 5.4 Clean up any spills and leave fuel storage area clean and tidy
  • 5.5 Note remaining fuel supply and complete written records according to task requirements and workplace procedures
6. Prepare and operate vehicle
  • 6.1 Check vehicle roadworthiness, load distribution and security before starting
  • 6.2 Identify potential vehicle hazards during vehicle operation and load and implement hazard minimisation procedures
  • 6.3 Plan trip that maximises safety and minimises cost
  • 6.4 Drive vehicle in compliance with local conditions, road and site rules as required
  • 6.5 Park and secure vehicle according to task requirements and workplace procedures
