This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to work effectively in Drilling.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for working in the drilling Industry
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply relevant drilling documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • 1.5 Communicate and coordinate activities with others throughout the work activity
2. Perform safe manual handling
  • 2.1 Assess load to be moved
  • 2.2 Assess and plan stability of the lift, transport route and lay down position
  • 2.3 Use manual handling techniques and aids safely and effectively and seek assistance where required
3. Routinely practice good housekeeping
  • 3.1 Keep all housekeeping areas clean, neat and tidy
  • 3.2 Keep all tools and equipment clean and stored in the correct place
  • 3.3 Identify and report potential hazards from poor housekeeping
  • 3.4 Implement routine of good housekeeping practices
  • 3.5 Report equipment problems verbally or in writing
4. Complete pre-start checks
  • 4.1 Walk around plant/equipment/vehicle checking all items are serviceable and in good condition
  • 4.2 Check and top up fluids as required
  • 4.3 Check all guards and safety devices are in place and serviceable
  • 4.4 Ensure all personnel are clear or in a safe position before starting
  • 4.5 Complete required written records and reporting
5. Refuel vehicles and plant
  • 5.1 Enforce no-smoking zone while refuelling
  • 5.2 Select correct fuel
  • 5.3 Refuel engine
  • 5.4 Clean up any spills
  • 5.5 Leave fuel storage area clean and tidy
  • 5.6 Note remaining fuel supply
  • 5.7 Complete written records/reporting
6. Drive vehicle
  • 6.1 Check vehicle roadworthiness, load distribution and security before starting
  • 6.2 Identify potential vehicle hazards from road trip/load and implement hazard minimisation procedures
  • 6.3 Plan trip to maximise safety and minimise cost
  • 6.4 Drive vehicle in compliance with local conditions and road/site rules
  • 6.5 Correctly park and secure vehicle
  • 6.6 Correctly change wheel as required
