Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to plan, construct and maintain an electric fence.The unit applies to individuals who plan and construct an electric fence under broad direction, and take responsibility for their own work.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, health and safety in the workplace requirements, legislative and regulatory requirements and manufacturer specifications.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine electric fencing requirements
- 1.1 Access property maps and assess fencing requirements according to workplace objectives and legislative requirements
- 1.2 Determine equipment, materials and labour requirements and ensure estimated costings are within budgetary constraints
- 1.3 Prepare fencing plan, including siting fences in relation to natural features and proposed use
2. Prepare for construction
- 2.1 Confirm work plan with supervisor
- 2.2 Select tools and equipment required for the task and check for safe operation
- 2.3 Organise and transport tools, equipment and materials to the work site
- 2.4 Confirm and arrange labour requirements if required
- 2.5 Identify potential hazards and risks, and implement safe working practices to manage risks
3. Construct electric fence
- 3.1 Select, fit, use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the task
- 3.2 Identify and fix electric fence faults
- 3.3 Construct electric fence according to fencing plan
- 3.4 Attach and position gates for correct operation and function
- 3.5 Install energiser according to manufacturer specifications
- 3.6 Check fencing for correct installation and performance
4. Complete fencing operations
- 4.1 Clean and tidy work area and dispose of or recycle rubbish and waste material
- 4.2 Transport, clean, maintain and store tools, fencing equipment and PPE according to workplace procedures
- 4.3 Identify and report unserviceable tools and equipment according to workplace procedures
- 4.4 Complete records according to workplace procedures
