Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to respond to a critical incident that may impact the operational effectiveness of a power generation facility's plant or system, endanger human life, damage or destroy property and/or have an adverse impact on the environment.A critical incident refers to a crisis that may result in a high level of risk, directly or indirectly, to the core operations of a power generation facility. A high levelof risk would be determined using the risk management processes outlined in the power generation facility's risk management system.Competency in this unit requires the ability to identify a critical incident and consequences, stabilise power generation system, restore power generation system and review response to incident. Individuals will, in general, work as an operator, in a power generation facility.Power generation plant operators are trained and authorised to isolate, prepare plant and issue permits to work.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Identify critical incident and consequences
  • 1.1 Work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations, legislative requirements, codes of practice, manufacturers’ recommendations and specifications, environmental requirements and workplace procedures are identified, applied and monitored
  • 1.2 Work requirements are identified from relevant personnel and documentation in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.3 Fault location is determined by monitoring and evaluating power generation system configuration and operational prerequisites in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Fault information is collated to determine type and cause of failure in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.5 Power generation system limitations and performance, including location and external influences, are identified in accordance with workplace procedures
2 Stabilise power generation system
  • 2.1 Critical incident response techniques are identified and used in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Personnel and external stakeholders are consulted prior to further critical incident actions being undertaken in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.3 Power generation system requirements are assessed and controlled to maintain stability and integrity in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.4 Corrective actions to rectify power generation system abnormalities are implemented following analysis of data in accordance with workplace procedures
3 Restore power generation system
  • 3.1 Specialised assistance is identified in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Strategies to restore power generation system integrity are identified and communicated to relevant personnel in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.3 Power generation system restoration is undertaken and monitored and adjusted in accordance with workplace procedures
4 Review response to incident
  • 4.1 Power generation system response is analysed in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 4.2 Critical incident preventive measures are documented in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 4.3 Findings are communicated to relevant personnel and key stakeholders in accordance with workplace procedures
