Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to teach ballet classes at beginner levels to young children. The unit applies to those who teach young children syllabus or non-syllabus ballet teaching. Exercises and teaching methods used should be suited to the physical and mental development of students through early childhood, specifically ages 4 to 7. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine learning outcomes
- 1.1 Determine and demonstrate understanding of learning outcomes for student’s ballet achievement
- 1.2 Analyse learning outcome requirements for barre work
- 1.3 Identify age appropriate technical requirements and goals
- 1.4 Identify age appropriate learning outcome requirements for improvisation and musicality
- 1.5 Identify age appropriate learning outcome requirements for dances
2. Design warm-up exercises
- 2.1 Design aerobic warm-up exercises
- 2.2 Teach a range of stretches appropriate for the specific age and physical development of students
- 2.3 Design and deliver exercises that stretch and flex the feet
3. Teach age and skill appropriate exercises
- 3.1 Teach a range of travelling movements appropriate for the specific age and skill of students
- 3.2 Monitor quality of ballon and footwork
- 3.3 Analyse line and quality of position
- 3.4 Monitor students’ control through body and legs
- 3.5 Encourage in students a sense of enjoyment and confidence in movement
- 3.6 Identify faults and suggest corrective exercises
4. Teach students to perform age and skill appropriate enchaînements
- 4.1 Teach a combination of exercises to create a series of steps, or enchaînements, specific to the learning outcomes
- 4.2 Perform enchaînements to music as specified in learning outcomes
- 4.3 Encourage a sense of performance, timing, musicality and artistry
- 4.4 Give feedback on rhythm, quality and coordination of movement
