Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to conduct a field hygiene survey as a member of the Australian Defence Force (ADF).It includes determining requirements, and performing and reporting on findings of field hygiene survey.This unit applies to personnel working in ADF preventive health.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.Persons undertaking this unit work independently and perform routine tasks in a range of familiar contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Determine field hygiene survey requirements
  • 1.1 Liaise with relevant stakeholders to gain support for survey activities
  • 1.2 Determine survey scope in accordance with operational requirements and procedures
  • 1.3 Clarify local area of responsibility to establish survey area and relevant boundaries
  • 1.4 Identify, source and evaluate current data for survey requirements to establish a point of reference and comparison
  • 1.5 Obtain and inspect relevant equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications and operational procedures
  • 1.6 Determine data collection methodology in accordance with operational requirements
2 Perform field hygiene survey
  • 2.1 Inspect general environment for its sanitary condition and areas of general hygiene risk
  • 2.2 Conduct initial hygiene risk assessment of building integrity and suitability for use and habitation in accordance with operational procedures
  • 2.3 Assess and record the presence of disease vectors, vermin and insects in accordance with hygiene survey requirements
  • 2.4 Assess location, condition and suitability of field hygiene and waste facilities
  • 2.5 Assess positioning and arrangements for food and water storage and handling facilities to optimise food/water distribution safety
  • 2.6 Determine recommendations and control measures based on survey results in accordance with operational requirements
3 Report field hygiene survey findings
  • 3.1 Record assessment findings in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 3.2 Communicate assessment findings and control measures to relevant stakeholders
